Barbara Gittings
Barbara Gittings makes sculptural porcelain “Vessels”, using Nerikomi techniques to put patterns through the clay. She then smoke-fires and waxes the work.
Born in S Africa, Barbara draws inspiration from her childhood experience of African art and culture. She’s intrigued by the geometric patterns in nature, especially when skewed or distorted. Nature achieves multi-layered effects via the laying down of strata, weathering and erosion. She hopes to catch echoes of all this in her work.
